Dunkirk actually has a land area of 4.5 square miles or 11.7 square kilometres. About 0.88% or 0.04 square miles of the total area is covered by water. Dunkirk is near Fredonia and other New York cities and towns. In fact, it is only 15 minutes away from Silver Creek.

History
Not much has been said about the history of Dunkirk, perhaps because most of the historical claims refer to Chautauqua County, where Dunkirk is situated. Chautauqua County was developed as the partition of the Genesis County. The partition was done for political purposes, but due to organisation, counties were still subjected based on the rules and policies implemented in Niagara County. In 1811, Chautauqua was finally organised and later had its separate government. This led to the growth of its cities and towns including Dunkirk.

Although Dunkirk only has a small population compared with other New York towns and cities, it is accessible to nearby tourist spots in the whole of Chautauqua County. Surrounding cities and villages include Fredonia, Jamestown, Sherman, Silver Creek, Clymer and Chautauqua County's seat, Mayville. With the Chautauqua County-Dunkirk Airport (DKK), getting around this city is easy enough. Local residents and tourists take advantage of the charter services and training facilities in this city. You can even tour around different parts of New York, and visit the famous Empire State Building or Rockefeller Center. Dunkirk is home to numerous hotels, other lodging facilities in the area, shopping centres and restaurants. But still, its prime tourist attraction is the Lake Eerie.
One of the popular publications in Dunkirk is the Observer. It is a local newspaper for Northern Chautauqua County residents. Since 1882, the newspaper has already been published. A branch of the Jamestown Community College is also found in the area.

Not only that, the director of the Hollywood film, "Gone in 60 Seconds", featuring Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie, was also born in Dunkirk. In fact, Director H.B. Halickis shot a sequence of this film in the Fourth Street of Dunkirk.
